Literature Gallery Update (22 December)

Journal Entry: Sun Dec 21, 2008, 9:46 PM
what's up in lit today? | LitNEWS FAQ

CR News

Happy holidays from the Lit Team and Community Development! Whether you celebrate Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Festivus (for the rest of us), or just like to spread some winter cheer, we hope you have a fantastic winter season -- and hopefully avoid the power outages from the snow that we didn't.

For the best up-to-date information on the shenanigans of Community Relations this holiday season, be sure to watch the news and $Moonbeam13's journal!

Merry Litmas!

It's that time of year again -- and Litmas is in full swing with a fantastic prose contest for you to spread some holiday cheer.

Write a shot piece of science fiction detailing the rituals and traditions that would be present during the holiday season.

Now, this doesn't just have to be Christmas!! It can be any celebration but there are some ground rules:

RULES:

:bulletred: The piece must be under 10k ± 200 words (NOT required that it be 10k, it could be 6 if it does the job)

:bulletgreen: Holiday must have some basis in an EXISTING holiday either secular or religious. We must be able to discern which holiday is being worked with.

:bulletred: Piece MUST contain a significant sci-fi tint. (if you're unsure of how to write sci-fi please consult [link] or [link] ) This does not mean that you can simply use a time machine to go back in time and explore the true meaning of Christmas. That simply won't cut it! In fact, the judges will be extremely pleased if there can be no time machines or deus ex machina at all. Call us crazy.

:bulletgreen: Entries must be new and written specifically for this contest. That means the submission date must be after 12.8.08. AND
Must be submitted to Community Projects > Contests > 2008 > The Future of the Holidays
If it is not, it will NOT be considered for judging.

:bulletred: DO NOT confine yourself to a heavy moral hand. Sometimes the true meaning of Christmas is not taking yourself too seriously. We don't mind thoughtful or realistic pieces, but please, we beg you—don't AIM to bum us out for the holidays. After all, the 29th is :StJoan:'s birthday. Please, think of the ali-ali.

For more information, be sure to check out the news article!

Literature Gallery Update (18 November)

Journal Entry: Mon Nov 17, 2008, 11:04 PM
what's up in lit today? | LitNEWS FAQ

CR News

That's right -- there was a big change this month in deviantART! The Artists Relations team has now been appropriately renamed to the Community Relations team, providing deviants the support they need for their creative talents. You can find out more about the changes in the GM team (Gallery Directors no more!), and learn about the new CR in $Moonbeam13's news article here!

To go along with the new CR standards, the team is celebrating with The C.R.E.A.T.E. Contest -- and there's still a few days left to get your entry in!

From the Desk of..

:iconstjoan: ^StJoan
Hi guys!
I just want to address a few troublesome things I've been noticing lately. If you have a conflict with someone in the community or in our chat #getlit, or perhaps even just in the forums--do NOT hesitate to come to me about it. It doesn't matter who the person is, I'm here to listen to you and help you sort out things. If you feel that someone is being a menace to you, do NOT hesitate to report them. I would much rather you come to me and vent (and/or seek resolution with the person) than get into an unsatisfying, nerve wracking, teeth gritting journal comment war, and I'm not just talking about with the person who irked you! It's irksom to me too because I am then absolutely unable to help you and find out what behavior caused the unpleasantness to begin with.
Secondly--if you have a suggestion or concern about the community, please come to me about it. When it comes to getting things done in this community, you do have the power, but I can make your life a lot easier and help you get your idea realized. What I see a lot is people putting in a lot of work to an idea or a project only to find out we already have something in the works similar or it already exsists in the community. That isn't good! and it can be avoided by communicating your idea with your GMs before putting in hours of work.
Consider your GMs your first resource, a living, breathing FAQ.
Communicating with us, letting us know what is on your mind, what you think we should work on improving, what ideas you have for the community--that is amazingly productive and so much more efficent and less stressful for everyone.
We're here to facilitate and support you, first and formost, but we can only do that when you communicate with us. Try as we might, we simply can't be everywhere at once.
Thanks and much love!
Alicia

AR News

Have you heard about A World of Stories? If not, be sure to click the link to find out more about this incredible book launch, courtesy of ^guruubii.

$Moonbeam13 is asking you to reconsider the Big "C". Read her journal to see why one letter need not strike fear and hopelessness in those it touches.

Have you been paying attention to the dA Group Polls? If not, make sure you stop by and have your say about the way clubs are and could be run on deviantART.

As a reminder: Any complaints about Daily Deviations should be directed to $Moonbeam13 and $FallenRox. We know that tastes run 'to each his own', but we'd really like to see people respect the fact that the writer did not choose the DD, the Gallery Director did. With that in mind, try to limit your comments on DDs to constructive criticism and feedback (critique encouraged!) and not insults or questions as to why the piece received a DD. Thanks!

what's up in lit today? | LitNEWS FAQ

AR News

For those who don't know yet, `GeneratingHype rejoined the Senior ranks and stepped down as Gallery Director for Lit. No worries, though: the three ladies make a terrific triumvirate.

It's rumored that AR is going through some major changes, but we're not privy to them. Once we know, you'll know: no worries.

^PurpelBlur, otherwise known as the "Ring Leader" is looking to put together interviews of AR staff members. See how you can participate in this ambitious new project.

As a reminder: Any complaints about Daily Deviations should be directed to $Moonbeam13 and $FallenRox. We know that tastes run 'to each his own', but we'd really like to see people respect the fact that the writer did not choose the DD, the Gallery Director did. Have you noticed the new articles ~jamberry-song has been putting out? If not, you should definitely take a look at Writing Contests and Places to Publish, especially if you need some help finding success outside of dA.

:iconwordspill:

After some healthy discussion about how deviantART can best serve more experienced writers, it was determined that nifty projects that encourage writing can help a person at any level, and maybe those veterans more than most. ~Wordspill is one such project--a brand new one having just completed a terribly successful first run. The concept is simple and only takes ten minutes of your time, so be sure to check it out!

We're not done yet! *deviantLIT is a new chat-based literature club on dA with strict rules and high hopes. Do you want literature talk and not usual dA nonsense? Well, if so, you might want to have a look. They're hosting a contest, too.

:iconwordcount:

Well, *WordCount is at it again! If you're looking for prose in all the wrong places, you might want to stop over and browse through Great Prose Exposed: WordCount Feature #13. And if that doesn't wet your whistle, there's always *WordCount's Favorites Gallery!

:iconmsjames:

The Summer HaikuWriMo came to an end, with new senior `MSJames hosting a spectacular event challenging the skills of over 60 writers on dA! Have a look at the article to see a recap of this tremendous success.

:iconscribesanctuary:

Still up-and-running, the *ScribeSanctuary has released its Scrine Spotlight for June and July. Look at the great work being done!

:iconbeccalicious:

`Beccalicious does it again! This time collaborating with Harmless, a nonprofit organization helping people who self-harm and those who love them, `Beccalicious encouraged dA writers to submit inspirational stories and poems for this grand cause. You can find the results here.

:iconsoundzine:

Just in case you missed it--and we sure hope you didn't!--~Soundzine has finally released the long-awaited Issue Five. Please do yourself a favor and check out ~Soundzine; you'll thank us later.

:iconmimesispoetry:

And while we're chatting up releases, have you seen Mimesis 4? Started by `PoeticWar (that talented chap mentioned above) and supported by a staff of deviants and non-deviants, Mimesis is really starting to make a splash in the poetry world. Don't miss out!

Resources & Education

:iconlovetodeviate:

July's issue of Write, the lit community's resource newsletter, focused on haiku and other Japanese concepts in poetry: Write #2: Why haiku?. August is Back to the Basics, so you can expect some articles on grammar, spelling, and punctuation as well as a few pointers for formatting or editing your work. However, don't wait for `GeneratingHype to do all the work! Take the initiative like =DarcKnyt and write your own! His article, Dots and Dashes -- The Em Dash and Ellipsis is currently in the news for your viewing pleasure.

Speaking of Basics, ~ElizaWyatt is hosting another great initiative after the success of her Villains Month! This month, she will explore "World Building", which is something many of us can benefit from. Please see her journal for more information!

Have you been trying to figure out the Villanelle? Well, =Mattiello has a great article and contest to get you back to the basics of this challenging form!

Keep a lock on her journal to keep up-to-date with our little Lit world. And don't forget to check out dA Lit's 8th Birthday Contest, Remembering Your Birthday!

Literature Gallery Update (17 June)

Journal Entry: Tue Jun 17, 2008, 6:44 AM
what's up in lit today? | LitNEWS FAQ

AR News

June 16th marked the birthday of our fearless AR Leader, $Moonbeam13. Send her love and cake and congratulations! Speaking of fearless, The Weekend to End Breast Cancer is right around the corner; don't forget to do your part to help others!

There will be some changes happening to AR in the next few months, but we'll be sure to keep you informed; no worries.

Thanks!

Lit News

:iconbeccalicious:

Congratulations are certainly in order! Ladies and Gentlemen, help us applaud one of our very own: June's Deviousness Award has gone to `Beccalicious! As the comment states:

From her own work to her critiques and advice to her peers, she brings an attitude many of us could learn a thing or two from. She also is committed to helping keep her little section of the world clean and organized, going out of her way to let us know when there are things in the wrong place, making the writing categories just that much better for everyone. On top of all that she provides a lot of insightful journals full of advice and resources for aspiring writers from all walks. Drop by her page and say hi to Becca, and wish her congrats on deviousness for June of 2008!

^StJoan has a poll running that asks if you have or had any great contest ideas. Have you? If so, remember to note ^StJoan with your ideas and requests so that she can stick you up on the schedule and really find a way to make the contest work for you (instead of you working for the contest).

Also, be sure to :+devwatch: her account so as not to miss the next Critique Request and Critique Contest! There's been some really great feedback given lately, and we'd love to see that trend continue,.

Administrative concerns? Suggestions for the team? Complaints? Compliments (haha)? Make sure to note ^StJoan with all your worries and love.
